Deserts

Most deserts are i n hot parts of the worls,where it is dry nearly all the times.
Some desserts are covered with huge,high sand dunes.But there are many other desert landscapes,including rocky hills and stony plains.In world's largest dessert,the Sahara in northern Africa,the temperature often reaches 50 Celsius.Despite the heat and lack of water,these are not empty wastelands.Plants like the cactus and animal like scorpion,and even some people,have become used to life in the desert.

Most deserts have small areas of water,where plants can grow and people can live.They are called oases.The Sahara has about 90 large oases.

In many desert regions,rocks have been worn away over millions of years by the effects of heat and wind.The deserts of North America are full of strange shaped,dramatic rock forms.


Some of the Sahara's sand dunes are up to 465 meters high.They are like seas of sand,and they change and drift with the action of the wind.




Cactus Plants



Cactus plants store water in their fleshy stems.The giant saguaro cactus can grow over 17 meters tall.Other desert plants suddenly shoot up if it rains,flower quickly and scatter their seeds.
